Israeli warplanes carried out airstrikes on military targets near Damascus and southern Syria.

The attack came just hours after Syria’s new government condemned Israel’s presence in the country’s south and demanded a withdrawal.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a statement that the strikes are a warning that Israel "will not allow southern Syria to become southern Lebanon."

Meanwhile, thousands of Syrians took to the streets in southern cities and beyond, protesting Netanyahu’s rejection of Syria’s interim government forces in areas south of Damascus.
