Syria’s new authorities have taken control of the country’s border crossings with Turkey in the north of the country, following a meeting with Turkish government officials.

The meeting was attended by Syrian officials form the General Authority for Land and Maritime Crossings and Turkish officials from various government departments.

It was agreed that the new Syrian government would take control of the Jarabulus, Al-Ra’ee, Bab al-Salamah, and Hamam border crossings, Mazen Alloush, the head of the General Authority for Crossings told Syrian state news agency SANA.

Syria’s longest land border is with Turkey. Much of the border area is controlled by the Syrian National Army (SNA) – a coalition of Turkish-allied Syrian fighters.

They have been involved recently in heavy fighting with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which has killed dozens of people.

On Saturday, the head of Syria’s Civil Aviation Authority, Ashhad Al-Salibi, announced that international flights to the country would resume on Tuesday 7 January.

“We are completely rehabilitating Damascus and Aleppo airports in cooperation with our partners, so they can receive flights from around the world,” Al-Salibi said.
