In a shock announcement upending decades of US policy on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, President Donald Trump has declared that the United States will “take over” Gaza after resettling Palestinians elsewhere.

He claims this redevelopment plan would turn the enclave into “the Riviera of the Middle East,” providing “unlimited jobs and housing.” Hamas, which governs Gaza, immediately condemned the proposal as a “recipe for creating chaos and tension,” vowing that residents “will not allow these plans to pass.”

Trump’s extraordinary plan has cast uncertainty over the next round of talks to extend the 42-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, set to expire on 1 March. Under the truce, 33 Israeli captives and almost 2,000 Palestinian prisoners are due for release.
