Moroccans criticise slow emergency earthquake response

Not much is left of Imine Tala, a village about 75km away from Marrakech, in southwest Morocco, following Friday's devastating earthquake.

But Imine Tala is far from the only village wiped out by the 6.8-magnitude earthquake that has devastated entire villages and homes in the Atlas Mountains.

With little aid from authorities, villagers have had to do emergency search and rescue operations themselves, racing against time to find any survivors trapped under collapsed buildings. According to official figures updated late on Monday, the earthquake – the worst to strike Morocco since 1960 – has so far killed almost 2,700 people.

But the Moroccan government has offered limited details about rescue operations, and this restrained approach has led to a wave of criticism on social media by Moroccans, who describe the official response as slow and disappointing.
