US, UK launch joint airstrikes on Houthi sites in Yemen

Live Story
22 January, 2024

The United States and the United Kingdom have initiated a second round of joint air attacks on Houthi targets in Yemen.

American and British forces carried out a first wave of strikes against the rebel group earlier this month, and the United States launched further air raids against missiles that Washington said posed imminent threats to both civilian and military vessels.

Yemen's official Saba news agency said strikes hit the capital Sanaa and several other parts of the country, while Houthi TV outlet Al-Masirah said four strikes targeted the Al-Dailami military base north of the capital, which is under rebel control.

Houthi rebels in Yemen have attacked what they deem to be Israeli-linked shipping in the vital Red Sea shipping lanes as the US and UK launched earlier strikes on Yemen, while attacks in Syria and Iraq have mostly been claimed by Iran-linked groups opposing US support for Israel.

Hamas has stipulated that any deal for releasing the captives must include a complete cessation of hostilities and the release of all Palestinian prisoners. The Israeli government is facing pressure from a movement led by relatives of the captives, who are advocating for an immediate agreement.

He told Israel that "peace and stability cannot be built only by military means".

"Which are the other solutions they have in mind? To make all the Palestinians leave? To kill off them?" Borrell said.
