Syrian security forces launch operation in Daraa province after attack by ‘pro-Assad’ fighters
Syria’s military operations administration sent security forces to the town of Sanamein in Daraa province in southern Syria following an attack by an armed group affiliated with the former Assad regime.
A military convoy consisting of around 2,000 fighters arrived in Sanamein from Damascus after an armed group formerly supported by the deposed Assad regime attacked fighters affiliated with the Syrian opposition, which happened on Saturday, ’s sister site Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.
A statement signed by the “Revolutionaries of Sanamein” called on the Syrian interim authorities’ military operations administration to punish what it called “the criminal gang which spilled blood” in Sanamein, saying that the pro-Assad fighters had to surrender or be killed.
A media activist group known as the Free People of Houran said that the group of pro-Assad fighters, led by Mohsen Al-Haimed, had previously carried out dozens of kidnappings and murders in Sanamein.
Daraa province was an opposition stronghold after the Syrian uprising against the Assad regime broke out in 2011. It reverted to regime control in 2018 but violent incidents between regime forces and former rebels continued.
Syrian forces have launched a series of security operations since the fall of the Assad regime, targeting mostly former regime elements, particularly in Homs province and on the coast.
In northern Syria, forces from the interior ministry arrested currency counterfeiters in Aleppo, as well as other people accused of crimes.
Also among those detained was Suhaib Al-Masri, a journalist who worked for Assad regime media. Video emerged of him being beaten after his arrest.
Footage previously emerged of Al-Masri filming the bodies of opposition fighters in the town of Khan Touman near Aleppo, when he was embedded with regime media.
In Homs, a security operation has been ongoing for four days. On Saturday, fighters affiliated with the new Syrian authorities arrested a former regime officer who operated checkpoints in the Al-Wa’ar area of Homs. Hundreds of people are reported to have been killed at these checkpoints.
