A man who tried to enter the Israeli embassy in Turkey armed with a knife was shot on Wednesday, the Israeli foreign ministry said.

The alleged attacker sustained light injuries from the shooting. He was detained by local security guards.

There was "an attempted assault near the Israeli embassy in Ankara," Emmanuel Nahshon, spokesman for the Israeli foreign ministry told AP.

"The attacker was wounded before he reached the embassy."

Embassy staff took refuge in a shelter, local NTV reported. No one was hurt in the attack.

Large numbers of police vehicles were dispatched to the scene and the road closed on which the building is located, AFP reported. Witnesses said they heard several shots fired.

The incident comes three months after a recent Turkish-Israeli reconciliation deal ended a six-year rift and restored full diplomatic ties between both states.
