As many as three shooters opened fire on a state facility serving people with developmental disabilities in the Southern California town of San Bernardino on Wednesday morning local time, leaving scores of victims.

Police said that a male and female suspect were killed in a gun battle with authorities after opening fire on the Inland Regional Centre, a state-run disabilities facility where police say 14 people were killed and scores injured.

The suspects were wearing "assault type" clothing and armed with assault rifles according to local police.

Police also discovered a device suspected to be an explosive device at the scene of the shooting.

Jarrod Burguan, cheif of San Bernardino police described the incident as "domestic terrorism" earlier in the day, and federal authorities have said that President Barack Obama has been informed about the situation.

The shooting comes days after a gunman opened fire on a Planned Parenthood clinic in the city of Colorado Springs, Colorado on Friday, killing two civilians and a police officer.
