A Qatari first aid plane arrived in Benghazi in eastern Libya amid the devastating aftermath of Storm Daniel, which has killed thousands of people and left many more missing.

The plane landed at Benina International Airport near Benghazi, in a part of Libya run by an administration affiliated with warlord Khalifa Haftar, who commands the self-styled "Libyan National Army".

Storm Daniel is the worst natural disaster to hit Libya for over 40 years.

The plane carried a field hospital provided by the Qatar Fund for Development as well as medical, relief and food supplies provided by the Qatar Red Crescent.

The death toll from catastrophic floods caused by the freak storm is expected to soar dramatically, with over 10,000 people reported missing, the Red Cross warned on Tuesday.

Derna, which lies 25o kilometres east of Benghazi, has been the worst affected city with local authorities saying around a third of the town has been wiped out.

Qatar had previously sent a relief plane to Morocco which was struck by a devastating earthquake which measured 6.8 on the Richter scale on 8 September. The death toll there so far has surpassed 3,000 people.
