Pro-Palestinian activists hold surprise protest in Baltimore over Israel celebration
This week, a group of pro-Palestinian activists held a surprise protest in Baltimore at an event called "Baltimore Celebrates Israel: 75 Years of Technology and Innovations".
The protest, which took place on Tuesday, disrupted a speech by Ben Cardin, a senior US senator from Maryland, who has pushed anti-Palestinian legislation, according to a press release by the Palestinian Youth Movement.
The demonstrators were from the Palestinian Youth Movement, the Jewish Voice for Peace, and other allied organisations.
Protesters at the event unfurled banners and chanted, "Divest from Israeli Apartheid Now!" and "War Profiteers Out of Baltimore!" They also distributed fliers about the companies connected to the event and what their business activities could mean for Palestinians. Other protesters marched from Rash Filed to the Baltimore Museum of Industry.
This protest was one of many held around the world as Israel gets ready to celebrate its 75th year of independence, known to Palestinians as the Nakba, or the catastrophe when around 750,000 Palestinians were forced from their homes.
