The UK's Prince William met Oman's Sultan Qaboos bin Said on Wednesday, after completing a short tour of the sultanate where he met royals, youth leaders and fishermen.

Sultan Qaboos welcomed the Duke of Cambridge to Muscat at his palace in nearby Barka on Wednesday evening, where the two held talks alongside ministers, royal court officials and the UK ambassador to Oman.

"His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said gave an audience at Bait Al Barakah this evening to Prince William, Duke of Cambridge," Oman News Agency reported, showing a photo of the two royals.

"During the audience strong relations binding the Sultanate and the United Kingdom and their friendly peoples were reviewed."

Minister of Heritage Sayyid Haitham bin Tariq al-Said - one of three people touted as a possible successor to Sultan Qaboos - saw off the Duke of Cambridge at the airport on Thursday wrapping up a three-day tour of the Sultanate.

During the visit, Prince William toured villages along Oman's coast and met youth leaders of the Outward Bound programme in Wadi Al-Arbaeen.

He also met fishermen and chatted with locals at Marina Bandar al-Rawdha, near Muscat.

Oman and the UK have long and close relations and royal visits are usually hugely important events.
