Palestine dispatched a search and rescue team to Libya on Wednesday, 13 September, after deadly floods swept the eastern part of the country, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

"The team will participate in a humanitarian mission alongside Libyan and international rescue teams in search operations for survivors and missing persons after heavy floods swept the eastern part of Libya", the ministry said in a statement.

According to the statement, the Palestinian team comprises 37 members from the Palestinian Civil Defense Service, the Red Crescent Society, the Ministry of Health, and the Palestinian Radio and Television General Authority.

Ahmed al-Deek, political adviser to the Palestinian foreign minister, said Palestine "has long experience in such missions in several countries around the world."

"The team will work in full coordination with the Libyan and international rescue teams operating through the Embassy of the State of Palestine in Tripoli and its General Consulate in Benghazi", al-Deek added.

Al-Deek explained that sending the team "confirms the solidarity of the Palestinian people with the friendly and brotherly country Libya."

The ministry said in a separate statement that at least 23 Palestinians, including children, have lost their lives after torrential floods in Libya.

A total of 3,060 people were killed, and 5,200 others went missing in the Libyan city of Derna after heavy floods swept the eastern part of the country on Sunday, said Libya's eastern-based Interior Ministry on Wednesday.
