Tensions continue to spiral in occupied East Jerusalem as a young Palestinian man was killed by Israeli police after allegedly carrying out a stabbing attack near one of the gates of the al-Haram al-Sharif on Thursday morning.

The assailant drew a knife after the police stopped him and stabbed one policeman in the upper body, according to a statement issued by the Israeli police.

Three members of the Israeli police were injured, the statement added.

Palestinian sources revealed that the man who carried out the stabbing attack was 20-year-old Amer Hussam Bader Halabieh, a resident of Beit Hanina in East Jerusalem. The police took Halabieh's parents for questioning.

After the incident, the Israeli police sealed off the area and closed Damascus Gate.

Far-right leader of the Jewish Power party wrote in a tweet, "It's time to restore security to the streets, it's time to put order here, it's time to have a landlord here, it's time that a terrorist who goes out to carry out an attack is eliminated!"

Also in the early hours of Thursday, the Israeli forces killed Dawood Rayan, 42, during clashes in Beit Diqo near Jerusalem.

On Wednesday, the Israeli forces shot dead Habas Abdel Hafiz Rayan, 54, after he rammed an Israeli soldier with his vehicle at a checkpoint near Beit Ur in the occupied West Bank.
