The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for an attack on police officers in Belgium by a machete-wielding man on Saturday.

Two police officers were left injured in the attack, while the assailant was shot dead by police.

Amaq news agency which is closely linked to IS citied "security sources" to say that the jihadi organisation was responsible for the attack.

IS said the man was acting on its earlier call for supporters in Europe to attack civilians.

Just moments earlier, Belgium prosecutors has said the assailtant was an Algerian national known to police for criminal offences but not terrorism.

The 33-year-old attacker, identified by the initials K.B., had been living in Belgium since 2012, the report said.

IS have claimed responsibility for a surge in attacks in Europe over the past year.
