The Iraqi military has said it killed an "entire detachment" of  militants in Kirkuk province on Tuesday after an attempted ambush on a Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) patrol in the area.

Major General Yahya Rasool, spokesperson for the commander-in-chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, said anti-terror unit snipers took out some of the militants.

The Iraqi military said "a number" of IS militants were killed in the operation, but did not specify how many.

The operation came after a deadly  south of Kirkuk on Sunday, which left 13 members of security forces dead.

Iraqi Defence Minister Juma Inad arrived in Kirkuk on Wednesday to head a high-level security delegation following the attack to be briefed on current security measures, state media reported.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi inaugurated a memorial wall in Baghdad to commemorate the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service's (CTS) sacrifices on Tuesday.
