Iranians in Washington demonstrate for International Women's Day
Over the weekend, hundreds of Iranians demonstrated in Washington, DC to mark International Women's Day.
They marched from Freedom Plaza downtown to the Ukrainian embassy near Key Bridge on Saturday. Beating drums with many carrying the pre-1979 Revolution flag, they held signs with the protest slogan, "Woman, Life, Freedom" and other signs related to the news in Iran.
This was their 25th weekly demonstration, which gathers at different spots every week in the US capital. It is one of many ongoing demonstrations across the world that was marked by the death of Mahsa Amini, who died in custody in Iran after she was arrested for allegedly not wearing her hijab in line with government rules.
"We're gathering here in Washington, DC every Saturday for 25 weeks. This is for the cause of change in Iran. We're trying to bring out our voices and revolt against the current regime. We want democracy, women's rights, and freedom. Hopefully, everyone can hear our voice and they can do something about it," said Atoosa Kashani, a doctor originally from Tehran, now based in northern Virginia, who comes out every Saturday.
"It is women's rights, but the bigger picture is that we want democracy and regime change in Iran," she said. "In 44 years, this is the strongest support I've seen. There's support around the world."
