An Emirati student in Ohio has been shot dead by a US police officer, authorities have said.

Saif Nasser Mubarak Ali Alameri, aged 26, was fatally shot after allegedly running away from a car crash site and wrestling with a police officer.

Police were called to Hudson, Ohio were the killing took place following reports of "erratic driving" in the area.

The Emirati student was allegedly involved in a crash when his car clipped another vehicle, causing it to flip onto its roof.

Alameri fled the scene but was apprehended in a wooded area by an officer shortly after, media reports said. He struggled with police before being killed. He received a single gunshot wound to his head, media said.

Mohammed Mer al-Raisi, the UAE's undersecretary for foreign affairs, confirmed the killing and said that embassy staff were following up on the "painful incident".

"In light of this follow-up, and after details of the painful incident are clarified by the authorities, the ministry will issue a more comprehensive statement at a later time," Raisi said in a statement carried on the WAM state news agency.

Alameri was a first year law student at Cleveland's Case Western Reserve University.

The officer involved in the killing has been placed on paid leave while the death is being investigated.

Earlier this year, Ohio police were involved in another incident involving an Emirati man.

Armed police in July "roughtly arrested" a UAE businessman dressed in traditional clothes after allegedly suspecting him of being a member of the Islamic State group.

The rough-handed arrest led to a minor diplomatic incident with the UAE warning citizens against wearing traditional garments abroad.
