Canada's Trudeau congratulates Joe Biden on US election victory

's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau congratulated on his in this year's US on Saturday.

"Our two countries are close friends, partners, and allies. We share a relationship that's unique on the world stage," said in a tweet shortly after news network the race for .

"I'm really looking forward to working together and building on that with you both," the Canadian premier added, referring to Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

Biden is due to assume his post as the 46th president of the United States in January.

Harris will serve as the first ever female, Black and South Asian vice president.

News networks reported a Biden-Harris victory on Saturday afternoon after projecting a certain win in the battleground state of Pennyslvania, allowing the Democatic contender to surpass the 270 Electoral College votes needed to become president.

Later on Saturday, Biden was also confirmed to have cinched Nevada, taking him to 290 Electoral College votes.

Incumbent President Donald Trump has refused to concede defeat so far, accusing Biden of "rushing to falsely pose" as the president-elect.

"We all know why Joe Biden is rushing to falsely pose as the winner, and why his media allies are trying so hard to help him: they don’t want the truth to be exposed," Trump said.

"The simple fact is this election is far from over."

Trump said that states had not yet certified the results, and his campaign has launched multiple legal .

However, near complete results issued by each state showed an insurmountable lead for Biden, allowing network news channels to call the overall result, as they do every election.
