Hollywood’s latest released “Wicked”, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, has been one of the most anticipated movies of this year. Yet, just before its local release in Kuwait, the critically acclaimed musical has been banned in the Gulf State. Many suggests that having some openly queer cast members such as Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey or Bowen Yang made all the difference. No official reason has been declared by the state, but one can easily remember a similar measure put to the popular movie Barbie last year to ensure the protection of “public ethics” and “social traditions” Kuwait is now seen as one of the strictest Gulf State regarding censorship, many choosing to cross borders to watch new films.
