US intelligence points to pro-Ukrainian group as behind Nord Stream pipeline attacks
New intelligence reviewed by US officials suggests that a pro-Ukrainian group carried out the attack on the Nord Stream pipelines last year, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.
There was no evidence that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy or his top lieutenants in Ukraine were involved in the operation, or that the perpetrators were acting at the direction of any Ukrainian government officials, the newspaper reported, citing US officials.
On 26 September 2022, there was a series of clandestine bombings and subsequent underwater gas leaks occurred on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipelines.
Intelligence communities on both sides of the Russia-Ukraine war were puzzled over who caused the attack.
"US officials said there was much they did not know about the perpetrators and their affiliations. The review of newly collected intelligence suggests they were opponents of President Vladimir Putin of Russia, but does not specify the members of the group, or who directed or paid for the operation," the New York Times said.
