Two Palestinian detainees from the Gaza Strip held in Israeli prisons have died in mysterious circumstances, prisoner advocacy groups have said, raising the toll of those from the war-hit enclave dying in Israeli custody to at least 47.

The victims were identified as 35-year-old Mohammed Idris and 31-year-old Moath Rayan.

Idris died in the notorious Ofer prison, located in the occupied West Bank, where incidents of systematic abuse, torture and other forms of violence against Palestinian detainees have been reported.

In a joint statement, the Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs Commission, the Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS), and the Al-Dameer Association for Human RightsÌýsaid they were informed of Idris's death on Friday.

Meanwhile, Rayan reportedly died earlier on 2 November, which was only revealed after the prisoner advocacy groups wrote to Israeli prison authorities, demanding information on his fate.

The prison, or the location of his death, was not disclosed.

The prisoner groups said that Idris did not suffer from any physical health problems prior to his detention, reportedly on 25 August.

Meanwhile, Rayan, detained on 21 October, was reportedly paralysed and suffered from severe health issues during his detention.

The groups condemned the rampant systematic abuse and crimes ongoing in Israeli prisons, which include torture, starvation, sexual abuse, rape and medical negligence.

"The continuation of these catastrophic conditions faced by prisoners, including the sick and wounded in particular, will lead to more martyrdom in the occupation's prisons and camps," they said.

It also criticised Israeli prison authorities’ lack of cooperation when being asked about the condition of Palestinian prisoners, and its refusal to disclose Palestinian deaths in its prisons when they occur.

Thousands ofÌý Palestinians have been detained by Israeli forces since the start of its war on the Gaza Strip, with at least 11,900 Palestinians from the occupied West Bank held in Israeli prisons since.

The exact number of detainees from Gaza, however, remains unknown, though it is estimated to be in the thousands. In February this year, the Euro-Med Rights Watch Monitor said 3,120 Gazans have been held in Israeli detentionÌýsince October last year.

Prisoner deaths are also estimated to be higher, as Israeli prisons have a track record of withholding such information from Palestinians.

Palestinians from Gaza continue to be forcibly detained and taken to unknown locations, before being placed in numerous detention centres amid Israel’s war. Among those detained has been Diaa al-Kahlout, the Gaza bureau chief for °®Âþµºâ€™s Arabic-language site, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.
