Sudan's army claimed on Tuesday to capture more territory in the country's second-largest city from the military's rival rebel group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

RSF fighters were pushed out of several areas in the west and south of Omdurman, with the Sudanese army seizing weapons and freeing several officers, according to The Sudan Tribune.

The RSF and the Sudanese army were allies until 2023 when a civil war erupted between the two military factions.

Omdurman lies on the opposite side of the Nile from the capital Khartoum and has been fiercely contested since the start of the country’s civil war almost 20 months ago.

The war has triggered one of the world's worst humanitarian disasters in recent history, with the UN saying that more than 30 million people require aid, over half of them children.

Some 150,000 people have been killed since the conflict erupted in April 2023, according to some estimates, with many more at risk of starvation and disease.

Al Jazeera confirmed advances by the Sudanese military, reporting gains in the Mansoura, Murabaat and Elfitihab areas of the city following two days of intense fighting.

The RSF has deployed drones in a bid to halt the army's advance, according to the report, as the Sudanese military seized territory from the militia in recent weeks.

In December, the army said it had recaptured the capital of Sennar province in the country’s southeast in December and had been engaged in fierce battles with their rivals in the western region of Darfur.

The US this week accused the RSF of committing genocide in Sudan and imposed sanctions on the group’s leader, Mohammad Hamdan Daglo.

The UN and international human rights monitors have accused both sides of committing war crimes during the war.

Several attempts by Saudi Arabia and the US to mediate ceasefire negotiations between the warring parties have failed.
