A Palestinian hunger striker and top figure in the Islamic Jihad group in the occupied West Bank, Khader Adnan, died in Israeli custody Tuesday, the Palestinian Prisoners' Club, Israel's prison service and a source in the militant group told media outlets.

"A national security detainee... (who) began a hunger strike on 5.2.23, died this morning," the prison service said in a statement, adding that he was "affiliated with the Islamic Jihad".

A source in Islamic Jihad told AFP the deceased was Khader Adnan, 45, a leading figure in the group in the occupied northern West Bank.

Adnan, who hailed from the occupied West Bank town of Arraba, has been on hunger strike for 87 days in administrative detention.

He was detained again by Israeli authorities in 2019 after being released from prison following another hunger strike.
