Palestinian faction Tulkarm Brigade claims Israeli checkpoint attack following brutal raids
A Palestinian armed group claimed responsibility on Tuesday for an earlier shooting targeting an Israeli military checkpoint.
The Tulkarm Brigade - affiliated to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement - said the attack came in retaliation to raids and arrests across the occupied West Bank.
The armed group said its forces were able to target Israeli military vehicles at a checkpoint near Tulkarm in the north of the West Bank at 6:40am local time (0340 GMT) with heavy gunfire. It was not clear if there were any injuries.
The Tulkarm Brigade often carries out "retaliatory attacks" against Israeli forces, who have carried out near-daily deadly raids in the occupied West Bank, killing scores of Palestinians since the beginning of the year.
On Monday evening, Israeli forces stormed Tulkarm in the northern West Bank and arrested former prisoner Mustafa Omar Odeh and his son Ahmed at their home.
The soldiers also arrested former prisoner Mahmoud Abu Diab near the Al-Safarini Mosque.
Israeli soldiers also detained other people in other towns and cities in the West Bank.
Since the beginning of 2023, Israeli forces have killed over 200 Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. More than 3,600 people have been detained.
