Palestinian boy bids emotional farewell before year-long Israeli prison sentence
A 14-year-old PalestinianÌýwas seen bidding an emotional farewell to his family before he was jailed by Israel, in footage that went viral on social media platforms.
Ayham Al-SalaymehÌýis facing a one-year prison sentence for "throwing stones" at Israeli settlers.
Inshared online by activists, the childÌýcan be seen hugging his friends and his father could be heard assuring him of his love and support.
"Every prisoner who's inside with you is your brother. They're all like you, imprisoned for their love of the homeland. Inside, you have to stand united as one," his father can be heard telling him in the video.
"Take care of one another! Don't fight! If your [prison] mate needs something, you should give it to him! If you need something, ask your [prison] mate for it. Your only enemy is your jailer – the one who locks the prison door," the father continued, adding "Every prisoner inside is your brother."
The father also appeared to prepare him for the difficult conditions inside the prison, informing him that there would be no money allowed in to buy clothes or food, but that he had packed what he could for him in the hope thatÌýAyham would be allowed to take them inside.
"I won't be able to see my family, but we are steadfast in Jerusalem," Ayham could be heard saying.
The father said he had shaved his son's hair in preparation for prison as razors and electric shavers were not allowed in jail.Ìý
The boy's emotional goodbye prompted global calls for Israel to be held accountable for imprisoning children.
Earlier this year, Israeli rights group B'Tselem reported that by the end of June 2024, the Israel Prison Service (IPS) was holding 226 Palestinian minors in detention or in prison on what it defined as "security" grounds.
International charity Save The Children also raised the alarm over the increase in Palestinian children being detained without charge since Israel launched its war on Gaza on 7 October 2023.
The charity said that more children were reporting facing abuse and violence while in Israeli prison.
Israeli forces have detained at least 11,900 Palestinians in the West Bank and occupied east Jerusalem since October last year, two Palestinian prisoner rights groups said this week.
The Palestinian Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Prisoners Club said Israeli forces arrested at least 15 citizens from the West Bank, including children and former prisoners on Saturday evening and into the early hours of Sunday morning.
The arrests often come with raids of homes and villages as well as the use of tear gas and live ammunition.
