Syria's opposition rebels have officially appointed Mohammed al-Bashir as the head of the Syrian transitional government, putting him in charge for the next three months, state media said on Tuesday.

"The general command has tasked us with running the transitional government until March 1," said a statement attributed to al-Bashir on state television's Telegram account, referring to him as "the new Syrian prime minister".

Syria’s former prime minister, Mohammad al-Jilali, reportedly held a meeting with al-Bashir on Tuesday in the presence of Hayat Tahir al-Sham (HTS) leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, also known by his nom de guerre Abu Mohammed Al-Jolani, according to Al-Jazeera Arabic.

Al-Bashir's government will reportedly be in charge of dissolving security services, reviewing the military service and abolishing terrorism laws, political sources told AJA.

The sources also added that maintaining security, providing services, and a smooth transition are the current priorities of the caretaker government.

The caretaker government will also reportedly prepare the ground for a permanent government, adding that consultations are ongoing in a bid to form a government, the sources said.

Ministers from the Syrian Salvation Government (SGG), which al-Bashir headed, will also cooperate with the caretaker government, according to the Qatari broadcaster.

The Salvation Government was founded by HTS and other Syrian opposition forces in 2017, controlling much of northwest Syria amid the civil war.

The Salvation Government, with its own ministries, departments, judicial and security authorities, was set up in the Idlib bastion in 2017 to assist people in the rebel-held area people cut off from government services.

Al-Bashir also previously held the role of the SGG's development minister.

It has since begun rolling out assistance in Aleppo, the first major city to fall from government hands after the rebels began their offensive, AFP said.

Al-Bashir was tasked with forming a transitional government on Monday, before being officially entrusted to head the transitional government on Tuesday.

Syria has been witnessing dramatic changes in its political landscape in recent days, after the opposition rebels, led by the hardline (HTS), seized the capital Damascus which ultimately led to the ousting of the Assad regime.

Assad soon fled the country and was granted political asylum in Russia. The regime’s fall prompted Syrians in the country as well as overseas to celebrate, while many refugees have already started to return to their homeland.

Following Assad’s ousting, al-Jalali said he was "ready" to cooperate with any leadership chosen by the Syrian people.
