Jordan recalled its ambassador to Israel on Wednesday, in a sign of the kingdom’s growing frustration over its brutalÌýbombardment of Gaza.

Amman’s decision to recall its ambassador Ghassan Majali, was over Israel’s "killing of innocent people and causing an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe" in the Gaza Strip.

More than 8,800 Palestinians have been killed in over three weeks of Israeli strikes on Gaza, including at least 3,648 children.

Jordan also told Israel not to send back its ambassador to Amman, who left after the start of the war on 7 October, according to a statement by Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Al-Safadi.

Safadi said this would remain in effect until the end of Israel’s war on Gaza.

Israel had recalled a number of ambassadors from countries that saw huge pro-Palestine demonstrations, and asked its citizens to leave.

Jordan has shared ties with Israel since 1994, but relations between the two have soured in recent years over Israeli policies towards the Palestinians.

More recently, the kingdom has been increasingly nervous that Israel's relentless bombing of Gaza could also spread into a wider conflagration, amid cross-border clashes with Lebanon and missile attacks from Yemen.
