Jordan bans Dr Strange for gay character, after similar move by Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait
The new Marvel filmÌý'' has been banned from cinemas across Jordan, localÌýdaily reported on Friday, citing an unnamed "official source" in theÌýMedia Commission -Ìýa government body regulating the media sector in Jordan.
According to the same source, the ban on Marvel's latest film follows theÌýauthorities unsuccessful attemptÌýto get the film producer to remove certain scenes, considered "immoral", fromÌýthe version to be screened in Jordanian cinemas.
On social media, many Jordanians expressed frustration and disappointment at the news. Through this ban, Jordan follows in the steps of other Arab states includingÌý Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Egypt.
While the Jordanian media commissionÌýdid not provide an official justification for the ban, Egypt apparently banned banned theÌýÌýfilmÌýbecause it featuresÌýan openly gay character, a source from itsÌýcensorship authorityÌýtoldÌý°®Âþµº's Arabic-language sister site two weeks ago.
