An alleged Iranian attack against Israeli nationals in Cyprus was prevented in the island state, Israeli media reported on Sunday.

A plot by intelligence services linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) was reportedly aimed at assassinating Israelis in Cyprus, before it was foiled by the Cypriot intelligence service in cooperation with Western partners, including Israeli and US secret services.

Security services were able to locate the suspect's equipment that was allegedly going to be used in the assault, but they were unable to arrest the main suspect responsible for organising the attack, Israeli reports said.

This was the second alleged plot to target Israelis in Cyprus in the past two years.

In 2021, a 38-year-old Russian national of Azeri descent was arrested for targeting Israeli-Cypriot billionaire Teddy Sagi, according to a report by the Cypriot Kathimerini news site.

The spokesman of the Israeli prime minister at the time, Naftali Bennett, said the attempted attack was an Iranian plot, and that the assassin was targeting Israeli businessmen and not Sagi specifically.
