Algeria 'ignores' Moroccan king's call to re-establish ties
Algeria has ignored Morocco's calls to re-establish ties one year after the former broke off relations with Rabat, according to local media.

has ignored a Ìýto re-establish ties a year after Algiers broke off diplomatic relations with Rabat.

An informed source in Algeria told local news outletÌýEchorouk Online that there was "nothing to respond to", signalling that Algiers was not yet willing to establish ties with its neighbour, with which it has had years of rivalry and strained relations.

"We cannot comment on a non-event," the source said.

Algerian authorities and media "totally ignored" the Moroccan king’s speech, and there was no official response to it, Echorouk said.

At the weekend, King Mohammed VI delivered a traditional speech marking the anniversary of his accession to the throne.

He said he aspired to work with the Algerian presidency so that Morocco and Algeria "can work hand in hand to establish normal relations between two brotherly peoples".

Morocco and Algeria have long been at odds over the disputed territory of Western Sahara, where the Algiers-backed Polisario Front is seeking independence from Rabat's rule.

Algeria broke off diplomatic relations with Morocco in August 2021, accusing Rabat of "hostile acts".

Algeria, a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause, has also criticised Morocco’s relations with Israel.
